All critique is positive. Bad photographers have the most to learn, and learning is fun. Positive, positive, positive

A really good book for insight into this topic, although not a photography book, is Mindset by Carol Dweck. She explores the "fixed" mindset vs. a "growth" mindset. Good for photographers, parents, teachers, trainers...

Does a portfolio only contain images that comprise a certain theme (landscape, food, portrait?) or the best of everything you do?

Part of the beauty of being part of a photography association is they have qualifications. These allow you to submit a panel of images to your peers and betters.

Find a mentor when you can't offer any more improvements yourself.

Why you talking about American Idol, if someone is in tune and has a half decent voice you should go to the next round. Photography isn't as cut and dry as that, its what the viewer thinks. There are many types of vocals, rock, country etc and for one it will sound good for another not so good.

Professors are awesome people!

People need the truth and to be coachable. Take the information and hard truth and it will benefit your work.

I bet even great photogs have off days and EVERY image isn't UBER great, some better and those get seen and less great ones don't.

Not everyone asking for a critique really wants one. They still want to hear 'oh your photos are great'.

The purpose of the review is important. I am an emerging food photographer and get tougher reviews from art directors. I am looking for a career but, the high end is more critical. My best reviewers found the positive and were always encouraging to continue and improve my craft.

But on that singing show people who lost still went on and was giving a record and everyone said they were amazing! it was about option

I think there's more to being a good photographer than getting good pictures - now I know that sounds weard ;) but like when you're in the portrait business and you make good pictures, great, but do the costumers feel comfortable while you take their picture? That's also important when talking about a good photographer!

I took critiques when taking distinction awards with The RPS, it was painful at the time, but I benefited so much from the experience.

@jkoncepz thephotoforum.com has a critique section to rip apart your image.

I had a review from a Sports Illustrated photo editor one time and they pointed out one image as one they'd never use. Guess was similar angle, timing, light etc.. everything other than being mine showed up in the very next issue??? yeah you got it.... lol

We pay to go to college. Trust me, professors have no concern telling a student their work for the class sucks. So should it be for payed workshops.

I found a good way to get critiques is to give them out.

I learn something new everyday...there is no way you ever stop learning.

Lou is great , he has work shops all the time, He is very patiant and encourageing. The best part is he is a food photographer and after the class you get to eat what the chef created in the studio

if u put the batteries and the card in, lens on camera correctly and can make the camera take a picture, u don't suck, now we need to help u visualize what you want to capture and draw out a plan on how you can capture it.
